Gear Maintenance

The 2008 Edition of NFPA 1851, the Standard on Selection, Care and Maintenance of Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting became effective June 24, 2007.  You can find a copy of the standard on the NFPA web site at www.nfpa.org.

The most significant change coming out of this edition is the addition of a chapter on the verification of Independent Service Providers (ISP) by a third party lab.  This will ensure that all ISP, performing repairs for the Fire Service meet a minimum requirement with the verification of their quality program, seam strength and moisture barrier sealing.

Minor repairs will still be allowed to be performed by unverified ISP but the list of minor repairs is limited to: 1) Small patches to outer shell, 2) Repairing stitches (Major A seam repairs less than one inch), 3) Replacement of hardware (except closure system), and 4) Re-closing the liner after complete inspection.
